Stewardship corner
For stewardship in 2014, we have $93,664 pledged so far, of the $100,500 budgeted/$118,715 needed for the 2014 budget. Please fill out a pledge form if you have not done so yet! Forms should be in the narthex.
“[W]hile the principles of stewardship seem to concern material things of this life, those principles are, above all, of such a character as to encompass all of the Orthodox life. After all, we can in no way, as Orthodox Christians, separate the “material” from the “spiritual,” the “worldly” from the “heavenly.” They are intertwined like body and soul: what affects one affects both.” (from On Stewardship and the Orthodox Life at acrod.org, the site of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Archdiocese of the USA).

Please continue to give comments to Fr. Peter regarding the bulletin format.

The prosfora this week were provided by Goldie Helgens, the Vacation Church School and Tula Margellos.

Our fall fundraiser is coming up on October 12. This is an important fundraiser for our community and we need everyone's help to make it a success. A sign-up sheet is posted in the church hall for helping at the event. There are lots of positions available, and with everyone helping things will run very well. Tickets for the event have been distributed; if you have not received any or need additional tickets, please see Michael Christodoulou.

We are looking for donations to cover the costs of the pastry ingredients. For a monetary donation, please make checks out to St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church and put “Pastry donation” as the memo. You may send in the donation or give it to treasurer Chris Paxton. If you would like to make the pastries, please see the sign-up sheet in the church hall. If you have any questions please see Regina Christodoulou.

Metropolitan Iakovos’s nameday dinner will take place on Thursday, October 23, in Palatine, IL, with proceeds benefitting the St. Iakovos Retreat Center and ministries of the clergy syndesmos. If you would like to attend or donate towards the cost of a table for St. John ($1000), please contact Fr. Peter.

Please give Fr. Peter names of your loved ones for our weekly paraklesis so that we can pray for their health and salvation. If you have given him the names recently, think about your list on occasion and let him know of any changes. Please specify whether you would like all or some of these names to be published in our bulletin so that our parishioners may add them to their daily prayers.

The parish of St. Demetrios is celebrating their 100th anniversary next month. Bp. Demetrios will be part of the celebrations, Saturday, October 25, and Sunday, October 26. For more information, call Karen Gartelos at 319-234-5656.

Please check the sign-up sheet in the hall for opportunities to sponsor the Sunday fellowship hour.

The next Orthodoxy on Tap - for those who are interested in the Orthodox faith or who would simply like to talk about the faith in a relaxed environment - will be on Friday, October 24, at 6:00 p.m. at Parlor City. Come and bring a friend.
